Can divorce papers be mailed?

Can divorce papers be mailed? In Kentucky, the answer is, "It depends." I know that is not helpful but the question is not specific. Are you doing an uncontested divorce (aka agreed divorce) where your spouse will sign papers the Court will accept in lieu of service of process so your spouse if properly before the Court? Are you doing a contested divorce (i.e. where there is a disagreement about something be it who gets what, how you will handle the child(ren), pet(s), etc, whether someone will pay spousal support (aka maintenance) or child support?).
